Pinhole Leaks In Sprinkler Pipe Are A Water Chemistry Problem

Nobody budgets for a pinhole leak. Black Sludge Points Toward Microbial Corrosion

Oxygen corrosion leaves a different signature: reddish tubercles, thinning at the crown of the pipe, pitting that reads more evenly across a sample. Together they settle the question that decides the budget, which is whether the mechanism is biological, electrochemical, or both feeding each other. If the deposits come back heavy in iron sulfide and the water carries sulfate, treat it as microbial and expect it to recur past whatever branches get replaced. By week three or four the chemistry usually comes back with a mechanism named, and since an estimate often lands a day or two after the first phone call, the calendar is driven by cutting and shipping more than by the analysis. By month three the valuable move is a second round: pull water again after any treatment or nitrogen changeover and compare it against the baseline. Two data points beat one.
